According to the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS), it’s a lateral curvature of the spine with cobb angle of >10º
Scoliosis is a complex three-dimensional deformity of the spinal column that causes structural changes in the three planes of the spine (frontal, sagittal and transverse plane) and may occur in all vertebral segments.
80-90% of all scoliosis are termed idiopathic. Idiopathic scoliosis is further divided into 3 subgroups which are determined by the time that the first scoliotic features are detected :
Infantile idiopathic scoliosis (initial manifestation of scoliosis up to 3 years of age)
Juvenile idiopathic scoliosis (initial manifestation from 4 to 9 years of age)
Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (initial manifestation between 10 years of age and the end of adolescence)
Other types of scoliosis including congenital scoliosis and neuromuscular scoliosis.
80% of scoliosis is developed without a defined cause and is known as idiopathic scoliosis.
However, idiopathic scoliosis is found to have multifactorial origin including genetic factor and gender factor. Meaning, there is approximately 38% chance that a parent with a scoliosis will have a child with scoliosis and generally scoliosis affects more girls than boys.
Physiotherapeutic scoliosis-specific exercises (PSSE) that been individualized according to patient needs, curve pattern, and treatment phase to improve scoliotic curves and to prevent/limit progression of the deformity.
Through physiotherapeutic scoliosis-specific exercises (PSSE), mobilization and hands-on massage, the treatments teach you the skill to provide long term solution instead of short-term pain relief.
Our practitioners are trained and have practical assessment regularly with advanced training methods.
At Your Physio, the method that is used here is called the Schroth Method. It is a spine alignment method originated from Europe. Here at Your Physio, we will perform a comprehensive physical screening to identify the spine deformity and analyze your full spine-Xray prior to treatment.
Your consultant will then proceed to advise on the severity of your case and then proceed to suggest the appropriate scoliosis treatment.
This method is utilizing physiotherapeutic scoliosis-specific exercises (PSSE) to target the source of your problem instead of just on the surface level.
Essentially, Schroth Method exercises are de-rotating, elongating and stabilize the spine in a three-dimensional plane to prevent scoliosis from advancing. This helps to eliminate pain effectively and prevent lungs and other spinal complications that comes with an untreated scoliosis. Apart from that, it also focuses on postural awareness and control of postural changes.
